I think this is how it works - what you hear from everybody with a dog, "Fluffy is the best dog ever!" Relationships should work like that.
Fluffy was special but not that special, i.e. it was largely within a certain preferred parameter (size, temper, winter dog, whatnot), but it could have been the other puppy right next to it on the first day.
Then, you start sharing life together, making memories, building trust, giving each other ears and heart, and be each others' pillow through good and bad times. Fluffy became she/he who has all of your heart. The best dog ever, not a result of breed, but from everything intentional and unintentional after the first contact.
