Boston Red Sox: Injuries lead to call up of prospect Tzu-Wei Lin
The Boston Red Sox have fallen victim to depth problems multiple times this
year. On Saturday, more injuries created more problems. Infielder Josh
Rutledge was placed on the seven-day disabled list. To take his place, the
Red Sox have called up prospect Tzu-Wei Lin.

Lin has always been a defensive-minded prospect. He has a slick glove at
shortstop and can cover second and third base, as well as some outfield. The
23-year-old has some speed, but after that wasn’t seen as much of an
offensive threat.

Playing all season for the Double-A Portland Sea Dogs, Lin has a
.302/.379/.491 slash line. While it may be a small sample size (159 at-bats),
it’s hard to argue with what he’s done.

While it’s definitely been a breakout season for Lin, the call up was still
a surprise. As Chris Hatfield of SoxProspects pointed out, the move makes the

Lin had to be added to the 40-man roster now though, which means someone was

placed on the 60-day disabled list. Anyone on the 60-day DL doesn’t count
towards the 40-man roster.

It’s unclear how long Lin will be in the Majors. The severity of Rutledge’s

field is a mystery. His versatility should help him find a way into the
lineup a few times though.

Injuries have definitely been a problem for the Red Sox in 2017. Sometimes
they lead to a player getting a chance he normally wouldn’t have gotten.
Tzu-Wei Lin is in that situation now, and it’ll be very interesting to see
how he reacts.
