Teng received the largest bonus given to a Taiwanese prospect in the 2017 inte
rnational class, signing for $500,000 with the Twins in October. In a trade th
at could pay significant dividends for the Giants, they sent Sam Dyson to Minn
esota last July in exchange for Teng, slugger Jaylin Davis and live-armed righ
t-hander Prelander Berroa. He opened last season in extended spring training b
efore dominating low Class A at age 20, going 7-0 with a 1.58 ERA and a .510 o
pponent OPS.
Teng's four-seam fastball ranges from 90-94 mph with riding action that keeps
it off barrels up in the strike zone. There's not much consensus about which o
f his secondary pitches is the best. Some scouts point to his fading changeup
while others prefer his slider, and he also utilizes a curveball.
None of Teng's offerings grades better than average, but he succeeds thanks to
his tremendous feel for his craft. He has a knack for reading swings, allowin
g him to sequence his pitches well while throwing all four of them at strikes.
Already hefty at 6-foot-4 and 260 pounds, he'll have to maintain his conditio
ning to reach his ceiling as a back-of-the-rotation workhorse.
