East and west in European draw
Thu 27 Aug 2015
We will play Porto, Dynamo Kiev and Maccabi Tel-Aviv in the group stage of
this year's Champions League.
Today's draw in Monaco has paired us with a familiar face and two brand
new opponents, both of whom are among the furthest east in the tournament.
We have been drawn against Jose Mourinho's former side Porto on three
occasions in this competition, most recently in the 2009/10 group stage
when we won both games.
Dynamo Kiev, the club where Andriy Shevchenko made his name, are new
opposition. They are the current Ukrainian champions having won their
first title since 2009 last season. Their Olympic Stadium held the Euro
2012 final.
Maccabi Tel-Aviv are managed by our former player Slavisa Jokanovic and
qualified after knocking out Basel on Tuesday night. Their squad includes
Tal Ben-Haim. We played in the Israeli capital 14 years ago, going down
3-1 on aggregate to Maccabi's local rivals Hapoel in a UEFA Cup tie.
