Capital city clashes in the Champions League
Thu 24 Aug 2017
Chelsea will play Atletico Madrid, Roma and Qarabag on our return to the
Champions League group stage.
The draw was made in Monaco on Thursday evening and Chelsea, as champions
of England, were one of the top-seeded teams. We were grouped with the
team from the Spanish capital from Pot 2, the Rome side from Pot 3 and
Qarabag from Azerbaijan from the lowest seeds in Pot 4. The order and
dates of the games will be announced later today.
We last played Atletico Madrid in the 2014 Champions League semi-final
having previously met them in the group stages in 2009. They moved into a
new stadium this year having finished third in La Liga last season, and
have former Blues Fernando Torres and Filipe Luis in their squad.
We played Roma in the 2008/09 group stage. They qualified for this
season's Champions League as Italian runners-up with Antonio Rudiger in
their side prior to his summer move to Chelsea.
Qarabag, the Azerbaijan champions, are new to this stage of the
competition. They qualified by defeating Copenhagen on away goals in the
play-off round last night. They currently play in their capital city
Baku.
