Luis Enrique to Chelsea talk won't trouble squad, insists Gary Cahill

In the six years Gary Cahill has been at Chelsea, he has grown accustomed
to managers coming and going as much as winning trophies. Since joining
from Bolton for ￡7million in January 2012, Cahill has collected half a
dozen medals under as many different coaches.

All the indications are that come the summer, Cahill will be introduced to
boss number seven because Antonio Conte's tenure at Stamford Bridge
appears to already be running out.

Former Barcelona coach Luis Enrique seems to be the club's first choice to
replace the Italian, although given the Chelsea hierarchy's ability to
change their mind, other candidates on the club's wish-list such as
Massimiliano Allegri, Maurizio Sarri and Carlo Ancelotti cannot be ruled
out.

Most players would regard such speculation as an unwelcome distraction,
particularly when Chelsea are trying to salvage the campaign by winning
the FA Cup and Champions League, as well as securing a top-four finish in
the table.

Cahill, however, is unperturbed by talk of the Spaniard taking charge and
insists none of his team-mates will be troubled by it, either.

When asked by Standard Sport if the squad have to make sure talk of Conte
being replaced does not have a negative effect on results, skipper Cahill
said: “That's right — we as players have to do that.

“This is a case of individual circumstances and situations. It is between
the manager and the board. We have no idea what's going on. We just
continue to work, give what we can for him and the team. That's the way we
have to be.

“I have experienced it [manager speculation] a lot in my time here but
this has been a successful period for the club. Chelsea is a successful

The current squad certainly showed that they are not giving up on Conte —
or the season — in the way they beat Newcastle 3-0 in the FA Cup fourth
round yesterday. Coming just four days after Chelsea lost in disappointing
fashion against Arsenal in the Carabao Cup semi-final, it was a noteworthy
result.

There have been occasions lately where Conte has cut a lonely figure, as
his ranting on the touchline is increasingly ignored by those in blue. As
Standard Sport revealed on Friday, Conte has continued to make his tired
men train on matchdays, even when he 'rests them' for fixtures.

However, when pressed if the Newcastle victory showed the dressing room
was still 100 per cent behind the Italian, Cahill added: “Of course we

Before February gets under way, there is the not-so-small matter of the
final few days of the January transfer window to navigate. Chelsea hope to
be one of the main benefactors of some incomings, namely left wing-back
Emerson Palmieri from Roma and a striker, too — whether it be Emerson's
club-mate Edin Dzeko or Arsenal's Olivier Giroud.

Cahill believes the club need some new recruits to help with the run-in.
“The last couple of months have been demanding to say the least,” he
said. “In terms of the fixture pile-up, I wonder if it has been worse
than before. I don't know if it is but it feels very heavy.

“The manager has tried to rotate to keep people fresh. But he can only

There could be players leaving, too, such as Michy Batshuayi, who scored
twice against Newcastle to take his tally for the season to 10 before
Marcos Alonso added the third. Belgium international Batshuayi is looking
for a loan move and Sevilla have been waiting patiently to conclude a deal.

Conte suggested after Sunday's win that he wanted to keep the striker and
Cahill said: “Michy got a start and took his opportunity, so I am
delighted for him. He works very hard in training and I'm pleased he got
two goals. They were very important for us.”
