Football gathers to remember Ray

The location, appropriately, was right in the very heart of Chelsea. On
Tuesday afternoon, at St Luke's and Christ Church, a memorial service to
celebrate the life of Ray Wilkins was held, and a huge number of guests
representing every aspect of football that had been touched by Ray's
unique presence were there.

From Chelsea Football Club, there were players and staff stretching back
to his very earliest days in royal blue, many of the team-mates he
captained in those memorable promotion days of the mid-1970s, and those he
later coached and encouraged. Frank Lampard, John Terry, Gianfranco Zola
and Gianluca Vialli all attended, as did Chairman Bruce Buck, Chief
executive Guy Laurence and Antonio Conte, whose friendship with Ray dated
back to their days as on-pitch opponents in Serie A.

There were England managers past and present, plus colleagues from the
other clubs where Ray had played or from the media organisations with whom
he had become such a familiar voice to many as a well-loved pundit and
co-commentator.

Ray's family were an important part of the service and as was explained

Sky Sports' Rob Wotton, in his eulogy, was able to speak as someone who
had been a young Chelsea fan growing up watching a struggling team in
which Ray was the shining beacon of hope, sold far too soon, and from the
viewpoint of a work colleague and friend in later years. He told of how
long it would always take for Ray to settle down on arrival in the TV
studio, given his greetings and words for everyone present.

The time Ray had for others and his determination to make sure all felt
welcome was also remembered by his close friend and Manchester United
team-mate Frank Stapleton when he spoke to the congregation. The two in
recent times worked together managing the Jordan national team. On meeting
Jordanian royalty and unsure of protocol, Stapleton recalled Ray's
straightforward approach of, 'Now what do I call you, I've never met a
crown prince before?' and how well it was received. A clear example of
Ray's natural human touch and ability to communicate with all.

Stapleton also said he hoped this month's FA Cup final between two of
Ray's former clubs would be a fitting day.

Ray's brother-in-law, Tony Bygraves, was able to give an insight into his
life from the point of view of someone very close to him as he moved from
club to club and during his post-playing days, and he recapped Ray's love
of cockney rhyming slang and what some of his famous favourite phrases
meant.
雷的內弟托尼˙比格雷夫斯能夠從與他非常接近的人的觀點中談到他的生活，他在後

As well as the service remembering Ray's humour and success, his son Ross
spoke of illness that affected his father more than many present were
aware, and his daughter Jade read a moving poem about Ray's life first
recited at his recent funeral. That he was never without loving family
support was abundantly clear.

After 90 minutes, fittingly, the congregation of family, friends and
famous football faces made their way out of the church and as former
Chelsea club secretary and family friend Chris Mathews had observed when
she made a reading, Ray was surely looking down and declaring: 'My word!'

- Chelsea Football Club and Ray's family invite supporters to attend our
Legends match against Inter Forever on 18 May, which has been dedicated to
Ray's memory, with further tributes from those who played alongside and
under him at Stamford Bridge to come on the day. A donation will be made
by the Chelsea Foundation to Crohn's & Colitis UK, the charity chosen by
Ray's family, following the game.
