PL2 report: Wolves 1 Chelsea 7
08 Aug 2022
It was a convincing victory in Kidderminster as our development squad
outclassed Wolverhampton Wanderers 7-1 on Monday evening in our first
Premier League 2 game of the season.

After a frustrating campaign last season, the young Blues began the new
term in style as we comfortably saw off the West Midlands side.
Harvey Vale opened the scoring after latching onto a sloppy pass, as the
young forward charged towards goal before firing into the bottom corner
from outside the box. Vale doubled the advantage six minutes later with a
goal which mirrored the first, as the attacker again pounced on a stray
Wolves pass and finished impressively.
Dion Rankine got on the scoresheet next, as he tapped into the net after a
drilled-in cross from Lewis Hall left the keeper stranded. Rankine, like
Vale, scored a brace, and his second came just after half-time as good
work on the left from Hall found Omari Hutchinson and the summer signing
fed into the path of Rankine for his second.
The fifth was straight from the training ground as a set-piece was played
into Hutchinson, he lofted a first-time ball towards the back post which
found the head of Bashir Humphreys, who headed across goal for his
centre-back partner Alfie Gilchrist to nod home. For all our domination
though, the home side did deserve a goal and they grabbed a consolation
from the head of Nathan Fraser.
However, it did little to stop our pressure and second-half substitute Leo
Castledine's great run towards goal led to him being fouled in the box.
The resulting penalty was slotted home by another substitute in Jayden
Wareham. There was enough time for Wareham to secure his brace, as he
finished expertly when he was played in one-on-one with only the
goalkeeper to beat.
== Bright start on a sunny day ==
Our opening fixture of the PL2 season was met with great weather
conditions and a crisp playing surface at the Aggborough Stadium in
Kidderminster.
Mark Robinson mentioned in the preview of this game that he would be
looking to instil a high press from his side and he would have been
pleased to see Chelsea's intense pressure force a mistake from left-back
Aaron Keto-Diyawa. Vale pounced and beat the only man between him and the
goal before finishing beyond keeper Jackson Smith.

Harvey Vale opened the scoring for the new PL2 season just as he did in
the first game of last season
The home side settled and enjoyed a lot more possession of the ball, but
they could not penetrate the resolute Blues defence. Just when Wolves were
seemingly finding their feet, in an identical goal to the first, pressure
on the backline forced a mistake from the home team and Vale was there
again to get the ball out of his feet and strike a powerful effort beyond
the reach of the keeper.
Just before half-time, the lively Rankine beat his man easily with his
pace and found Xavier Simons in the box, whose first-time shot cannoned
back off the crossbar. So unlucky!
We were dominating proceedings and firmly in control of this fixture.
Having lost to Wolves in pre-season, it was clear our young Blues were
intent on stepping up.
== Sublime half of football ==
To add further gloss to the first half, a third goal was scored as a
delightful cross-field ball from Charlie Webster found Hall, whose turn of
pace was too much for his opponent. He delivered a wicked ball into the
six-yard box which found the lurking Rankine at the back post and it was a
deserving third.

Dion Rankine was a threat for the hosts all evening
The second half was more of the same and our development squad were oozing
in class and confidence with neat touches and pretty combination play.
Just before the hour mark we scored our fourth as Rankine grabbed his
second of the game. Hall, our left wing-back, played a reverse ball to
Hutchinson and the summer signing from Arsenal fired a cross which found
the midfielder to tap home.

Omari Hutchinson on his debut for our Academy grabbed an assist
The home side had their first chance of note 67 minutes into the game as
captain Joe Hodge forced Eddie Beach into a solid near-post stop.
== Work of art ==
Robinson would have been impressed with the next goal, one straight off
the training ground as Gilchrist headed home from a set-piece. Webster's
quick free-kick was played into Hutchinson, who lofted a ball towards the
back post. Humphreys nodded it back across goal and last year's Under-18s
captain was on hand to open his account for the new season.

Alfie Gilchrist finished off a lovely team move which included Hutchinson
and Humphreys
For all their efforts, the home side did deserve a goal and they found it
through Fraser, who flicked in a cute header which beat Beach at his far
post.
== A day of braces ==
However, this did little to derail us as Wareham became the third player
to grab a brace. Castledine picked up the ball from deep and drove towards
goal, before being brought down for a penalty which Wareham slotted home
from 12 yards.
Wareham's second saw him beat the attempted offside trap from Wolves and
he calmly finished past Smith in goal, to ensure a perfect start to the
PL2 season for Robinson's Blues.

Jayden Wareham was one of three players to grab a brace
