Havertz on why 'exciting' Sterling deserved his goals
29 AUG 2022
Kai Havertz was pleased to see summer signing Raheem Sterling get his
first goals in a Chelsea shirt against Leicester City and is determined to
join him on the scoresheet as soon as possible.

The pair have lined up alongside each other in the Blues attack for all
four of our matches so far in 2022/23, meaning Havertz knows as well as
anyone what Sterling is bringing to the team following his move to
Stamford Bridge from Manchester City.
The England international opened his account for the club on Saturday,
when he scored both goals in a 2-1 Premier League win over Leicester at
the Bridge, and his fellow forward believes it was no less than he
deserved.
'We are all delighted for him,' said Havertz. 'You can see in every
training session how much work and effort he puts in, and he just deserves
it.

'It is nice to play with him. He has lot of experience and knows how to
move, and it helps you a lot if you have such experienced players next to
you. His style of play suits us very well.'
Sterling's match-winning contribution against Leicester, to give the Blues
victory despite going down to 10 men in the first half, was impressive,
but Havertz insists there will plenty more still to come from the
27-year-old as he becomes more familiar with his new surroundings, even if
he has already settled quickly at Chelsea.
'We needed goals, he scored two goals in the end and that's the most
important thing. In the end, I think he did well and he helped us a lot.

Sterling celebrates his first goal for Chelsea
'It is very exciting to have him here. We have played four games and he
has shown his quality again on Saturday. Sometimes it takes a bit of time
to adapt 100 per cent, but he has adapted very fast and we can build on
that in the future.'
While Sterling got off the mark against Leicester, Havertz is still
looking for his first goal of the new campaign, after finding the net 14
times in all competitions in 2021/22, with his most recent strike coming
in the win over Watford on the last day of last season.
Although the German didn't have much in the way of opportunities to change
that against Leicester, he is eager to do so when we travel to Southampton
in the Premier League on Tuesday evening, acknowledging there is always
pressure on strikers to score goals, no matter how much else they
contribute to the team.
'It is not about luck, I didn't have a shot on target on Saturday,' added
Havertz. 'I need to score, I know this, my job is to score. I want to
score and I play to score and I will keep on working. I hope to do it on
Tuesday.

Havertz on the ball against Leicester
'The pressure is always there when you play up front, you can always feel
it. My game is not only about scoring goals, it is about helping the team
with other qualities and I try to do that as well.'
Thankfully our No29 doesn't have to wait long for his next chance to find
the net, so expect to see a very happy Havertz if the German's name
appears on the score sheet at St Mary's in our next match, especially if
it is alongside Sterling's.
