Ian Maatsen has left Chelsea and completed a permanent transfer to Aston
Villa.
The Dutchman has made the switch to the Midlands and ends his six-year
Chelsea stay, which culminated in a loan spell at Borussia Dortmund during
the second half of last season.
The versatile left-sided player joined our Academy from PSV Eindhoven in the
summer of 2018 and made his senior debut for the Blues a year later, coming
off the bench during a 7-1 League Cup win over Grimsby Town in September 2019.
Following successful Football League loans at Charlton Athletic, Coventry
City and Burnley – the latter of whom he helped to the Championship title –
Maatsen returned to Chelsea and was incorporated into the first-team squad
ahead of the 2023/24 season.
The left-back made 15 appearances for the Blues before spending the second
half of the season on loan at Dortmund, who he helped reach the Champions
League final against Real Madrid last month.
Maatsen will now continue his career at Villa Park having agreed a permanent
switch to Unai Emery’s side.
We thank Ian for all his efforts at Stamford Bridge and wish him well for the
future.
