[請益] help by這是什麼用法

看到一部影片在講到狗，
裡面講到一句，
Most of the time,he helps by laying in the shade,
翻譯是大多時候，狗狗都躺在陰涼處。
這個help by是什麼用法，還是它有其他的意思?
如果是那句少了helps by 變成只有 he lies in the shade,
語意上會有什麼差別嗎?

看起來資訊不太足，不過感覺是在講狗狗幫助了什麼，以躺在陰涼處的方式 (by...)而且是不是應該是 lying?
