這次是出自Pinker所著的The Language Instinct。
A language instinct may seem ___ to those who think of language as the zenith
of the human intellect and who think of instincts as brute impulses that compel
furry or feathered zombies to build a dam or up and fly south.
這題可以從language instinct、think of language as the zenith of the human
intellect、think of instincts as brute impulses看出端倪。
先注意到句中的those who think of… and who think of…，這邊的兩種人是用and連接
，表示這兩種人想表達的是同樣的意思。think of language as the zenith of the
human intellect是說這些人「認為語言是人類智慧的巔峰」，think of instincts as
brute impulses是說這些人「認為本能只是野蠻的衝動」，所以簡而言之就是「語言本能
(language instinct)不會湊在一起」。所以空格裡填的就是對這些人而言，語言本能是
「不正常、衝突、刺耳」的”jarring”。
整句翻譯如下：
對於那些覺得語言是人類智慧的巔峰的人，還有覺得本能只是那種有長毛的生物去築水壩
