Local governments refer to results of such meetings in the process of judging whether to approve the nuclear plant's restart.
The Nuclear Regulation Authority, or NRA, ruled last month that the safety measures for the Sendai plant submitted by operator Kyushu Electric Power Company meet new government requirements.
On Thursday, NRA officials briefed residents of host city Satsumasendai in Kagoshima Prefecture. This is the first of the scheduled meetings at 5 municipalities hosting or located near the plant.
The officials explained the revised projections of possible earthquakes and tsunami based on new regulations. They also briefed people on measures to deal with severe accidents.
Residents argued the projections underestimate the maximum conceivable magnitude of quakes. They insisted that measures for earthquakes, tsunami, and serious accidents be strengthened.
The officials responded that the new regulations take into account Japan's geology while referring to requirements in other countries.
Many residents were raising comments and questions even after the meeting was extended for nearly 30 minutes. But the officials ended the session, prompting discontent among the residents.
Kagoshima Prefecture and Satsumasendai City officials will decide whether to agree to resume the plant's operation after studying residents' opinions and debate in the local assemblies.
