毫無疑問，美國人對藍染的牛仔褲情有獨鍾
事實上，製造商每年生產出三十億條牛仔褲呢！
但是生產一個經典的藍染牛仔褲，其實對環境有很大的影響，
像是在藍染過程中產出有毒化學物質。
「如果你直接把他丟到溪裡，很多丹寧布料生產線是這樣做的，
會殺死河裡面的很多魚唷Q__Q！」柏克萊研究員約翰肚勃博士說。
為了讓生產過程更乾淨，
肚勃跟他加州大學的團隊設計出了一套截然不同的藍染程序！
不使用石化藍染成分，他們改用植物成分─是20世紀之前就被使用的藍染材料的膩！
There's no doubting America's love affair with blue jeans.
In fact, manufacturers churn out roughly three billion pairs a year.
But producing that classic, indigo blue also comes with a major environmental
challenge,
disposing of a toxic chemical used in the dying process.
"If you simply throw it in streams, which is done in many denim dying
facilities,
it kills the fish in the rivers," says Berkeley researcher John Dueber, Ph.D.
To clean up the process, Dueber and his team at the University of California
set out make indigo dye in a new and different way.
Instead of the current petroleum based formula, they turned to plants,
the original source of indigo before the 20th century.
