The average working week in the Netherlands is 40 hours. In many companies,
your lunch breaks are not part of your official working hours (and therefore
not paid for). So if you work 8 hours a day, you are expected to be present
between 8.5 and 9 hours, depending on your breaks.
The maximum number of hours you are allowed to work is 12 hours per day, with
a maximum of 60 hours per week in case of shift work. However, during a
period of 16 weeks, you are not allowed to work more than 48 hours a week on
average.
Employee rights and working conditions
Legally, the minimum number of annual leave is four times the number of
working days per week. So if you have a full time job of 40 hours per week,
you have at least 20 holidays a year (4x5). In some instances agreements
between a specific sector or employer and a labour union make it possible to
receive more holidays. Dutch civil servants, for example, have on average 33
holidays a year and teachers as many as 60!
Other employment conditions such as sick leave, leave of absence and
retirement schemes are mostly well taken care of. All employee rights and
primary and secondary working conditions are laid down in your employment
contract and have to correspond to certain minimum levels at the very least.

Source: 2014 OECD
