註：歌詞描述1971年Deep Purple在瑞士錄製Machine Head專輯時所發生的真實
事件。
當時Deep Purple向the Rolling Stones租借了他們的移動錄音室（歌詞中稱之
為mobile或the Rolling truck Stones），並下榻在日內瓦湖畔的蒙特勒賭場
（蒙特勒爵士音樂節(Montreux Jazz Festival)的舉辦場地），打算在那裡錄音。
某晚當Frank Zappa和他的樂團The Mothers of Invention在賭場的劇院表演時，
觀眾中有人發射信號槍（flare gun），導致場地失火。蒙特勒爵士音樂節的主辦人
Claude Nobs（即詞中所稱的Funky Claude）急忙搶救觀眾；賭場燒毀，濃煙瀰漫
在日內瓦湖水面。
由於蒙特勒賭場已然燒毀，Deep Purple只好另覓可錄音的場地，但事情並不順
利。最終在一個星期後，才落腳在沒什麼客人的蒙特勒酒店（即詞中之Grand
Hotel），錄製了這首Smoke on the Water。
