Just when you thought that Chinese television couldn’t possibly get any more
exciting, Hunan TV has unveiled a new quiz show focused on the teachings of
Xi Jinping.
The show, titled “Studying Xi in the New Era” (新时代学习大会), debuted on
Sunday at 7:30 pm on Hunan Television, China’s second-most-watched channel.
According to a People’s Daily write-up, it aims to use television and new
media to help party members and young students learn new ideas and embrace
China’s new era, carrying on the spirit of last year’s 19th Party Congress
and advocating the incorporation of Xi Jinping Thought into all aspects of
daily life.
It is the second season of an ideological quiz show produced by Hunan TV with
help from local propaganda and education departments called “Socialism Wave”
(社会主义有点潮). The series will be five episodes long with each episode
lasting 40 minutes and focusing on a different aspect of Xi Jinping Thought
on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era (习近平新时代中国特色
社会主义思想).
The first episode explores where Xi Jinping Thought came from, the second
what it is, the third what changes it will bring about, the fourth how it
will be put in action, and the fifth where it will take China.
Each episode features three contestants who are whittled down to two by
answering multiple choice questions individually about Xi Jinping Thought and
related Communist Party ideologies. The two remaining contestants then go
head-to-head to determine a winner. Meanwhile, several venerable university
experts are on hand to help provide explanations about the subject matter as
an audience of smiling youngsters look on.
The first episode of the show begins with a Chinese spaceship traveling back
in time to visit with a Mandarin-speaking Marx.
Then, a floating robot asks a contestant questions dealing with the Communist
Manifesto. Yes, seriously.
However, the show doesn’t dawdle too long in Germany, soon tracing the
ideological path of Xi Jinping. In the second round, students listen to
excerpts of Xi’s speeches and ring in to answer questions posed by a cheery
moderator.
Sinologist David Moser shared one clip on Twitter from the game show in which
the two young contestants listen to Xi speaking on how China must now move to
the forefront and advance the cause of human development and social progress
around the world. They are then asked the question: “What is the goal of
great power diplomacy with Chinese characteristics.”
“To develop new global partnerships and promote the building of a community
with a shared future for humanity,” one of the contestants answered quickly.
Other questions in the first episode of “Studying Xi in the New Era,”
included: “What is the guiding ideology of the Communist Party?” “How
many years did Xi spend in the Liangjiahe Brigade in Northern Shaanxi?” and
“What is the Communist Party of China oath?”
Here’s a preview of the show which helps to capture all of the excitement.
If you’d like to test your own Xi Jinping Thought knowledge, you can watch
the first two episodes on Mango TV right now. The remaining episodes will air
at 10 pm for the rest of the week.
Since becoming China’s top leader, Xi Jinping has broken with post-Mao
tradition and cultivated his own cult of personality, including the release
of a mobile app, “best-selling” books, and a game that allowed users to “
clap for Xi.”
Meanwhile, Xi has consolidated his power within China’s leadership. Earlier
this year, China did away with presidential term limits, allowing Xi to stay
on as ruler for life. At the same time, Xi Jinping Thought was
formallyenshrined into China’s Constitution.
