A Boeing passenger plane carrying 62 people crashed into the Java Sea on
Saturday, Indonesian authorities said.

The Sriwijaya Air jet lost contact after taking off from the country’s
capital, Jakarta, according to Indonesian Transportation Ministry spokeswoman
Adita Irawati. It was headed from Jakarta to Pontianak, the capital of West
Kalimantan province on Indonesia’s Borneo island, and went missing at 2:40
p.m. local time, she said.

Boeing Co. recently agreed to pay $2.5 billion to resolve a U.S. Justice
Department criminal investigation and admit employees deceived aviation
regulators about safety issues relating to a different model, the 737 MAX.
Indonesian officials said at a news conference that 62 people were aboard the
flight, including 12 crew. Theodora Erika, a spokeswoman for Sriwijaya Air,
an Indonesian carrier, said the flight was a Boeing 737-500.

Boeing said in a statement that it was aware of the media reports from
Jakarta and closely monitoring the situation.
Indonesia’s search and rescue agency said Saturday that the Sriwijaya flight
was believed to have crashed around Kepulauan Seribu, a series of islands
near Jakarta. Their teams would begin a rescue mission Sunday morning, the
agency said.
Indonesia television showed footage of passengers’ relatives crying at the
airport while they waited for updates from authorities.
Indonesia, an archipelagic nation of 270 million, has seen a rapid surge in
air travel over the last decade.
In 2018, a Lion Air jetliner crashed into the Java Sea carrying 189 people
shortly after taking off from Jakarta in what was a major incident involving
the Boeing 737 MAX.
