在國外早期的著作中曾經出現
如 Harriet Martineau,在1832年的著作 《Illustrations of Political Economy》
"It was a sight of monotony to behold one sheep after another follow the
adventurous one each in turn placing its fore-feet on the breach in the
fence, bringing up its hind legs after it,looking around for an instant
from the summit, and then making the plunge into the dry ditch
數著一隻接著一隻的羊 這是如此單調的景象 跟著出現創新的數羊法
一隻一隻的羊 置前腳於柵欄缺口 抬起後腳跨越它 注視著跳躍高點的瞬間
下降落於乾燥的溝渠....
而在更早期的著作
Miguel de Cervantes, 賽凡提斯也在 Don Quixote 唐吉訶德中提到數羊
只不過當時他用的是山羊 而非綿羊
而賽凡提斯的創作可能是採用12世紀在西班牙誕生的故事集 Disciplina Clericalis
裡頭 The King and his Story-teller 國王和他的說書人 (section12)也幽默地提到
數羊的概念
Disciplina Clericalis 主要蒐錄伊斯蘭世界的故事為素材 是以數羊作為一種實踐
在伊斯蘭世界可能早於12世紀
