這是希臘悲劇 Oedipus the King 裡的問題。
Sophocles 的作品。
劇中妖獸 Sphinx 問前往 Thebes 旅客這個問題：什麼動物早上走路四隻腳，中午兩隻腳，晚上三隻腳？
答不出來，格殺勿論。
Oedipus 答出正確答案：人。
嬰兒地上爬行用四隻腳，成人走路兩隻腳，老人拄著拐杖三隻腳。
居然有人答出問題，妖獸 Sphinx 氣到暈倒。
