https://i.imgur.com/qNvZECa.png
I work for a taiwanese publicly listed company in the hospitality industry.
My manager spoke to the whole team regarding an intern who called in sick.
Stomach pain, food poisoning, he is basically in the hospital.
My manager told us. "Not because your sick you can decide whether to come to
work or not" whether you have a doctor's note us upper management will decide
if you can come to work or not."
Thoughts?

Sounds like a shit job
Typical Taiwanese employer, but culturally Taiwan is just a shit place to
work.
I caught a flu during the last days of boot camp from my bunk mate who had
just spent few days in the infirmary / quarantine. I started having a fever
that wouldn’t go away. Eventually I went to the ER in the middle of the
night asking them to give me something, anything, which they did. Then I
asked the doctor to give me a note so I wouldn’t have to report to duty the
next day. He said, “What do you think this is? You’re a conscript, not on
vacation. “
Without a doctors note I could only take half of a day off. I reported to
duty and spent the rest of the day sitting at this desk all disoriented from
being drugged up. I remember thinking, “fuck this country’s work culture,”
and I left as soon as I completed my service.

Name and shame the fucking company. Only way this country is going to improve
in terms of working conditions.

Sounds like Taiwanese management.
Hospitality industry? Yeah that checks out.
And they wonder why they have a labor shortage

Fuck this dude, and no more of that Taiwanese culture is like this bullshit.
If this happens, shout the company out and we all avoid it. Takes everyone to
make it better

Very typical in Taiwan, doesn’t mean it’s right, but very typical,
regardless of the field you work in. There is still a strong belief that your
job is your identity, and people wear it proudly. My Dad worked as a director
in television in Taiwan until he retired in 2012. Ever since I was a kid, he
was called “導播,” wherever he went, usually in his circle of work friends
or people he knew who worked in TV. There is no separation of work and life,
as in going home at night and not take work home with you. It’s very rare
that you get to do that in Taiwan.
So when people do stuff like take a vacation, call in sick, etc., management
gets frazzled and start suspecting where you’re going that day rather than
wishing you feel better soon, and to rest up. It’s a very fucked up
mentality, tbh.
