Lin laments end to ‘up-and-down year’

On Sunday morning, Jeremy Lin’s cell phone alarm went off. He looked at it, and there in his calendar notifications were the words that would ruin his day.

The Rockets guard forgot to delete the calendar item when the Rockets lost in Game 6 to Portland on Friday night.

“That kind of sucked,” Lin said. “That’s probably when it really hit me. It’s over. It’s weird. No more film, no more anything, It’s over.”

After the loss on Friday which came on a fadeaway 3-point shot from Trail Blazers’ guard Damian Lillard with 0.9 seconds to play, Lin was in a state of disbelief.

He sat in the locker room motionless, barely reacting when anyone spoke to him.

It was, though, and the roller coaster ride that Lin had been on since training camp came to an abrupt stop. And he wasn’t quite ready to get off.

But before the season started, Lin’s role changed. In preseason, coach Kevin McHale seemed to be leaning toward a more defensive look that started with Pat Beverley at point guard Pat Beverley. Lin would come off the bench and lead the Rockets’ second unit.

Lin squared himself with the new role and embraced it, but it didn’t take long for it to change. Beverley was hurt in the first game of the season, and after losing his starting spot, Lin had it back for a limited time.

Lin and Beverley traded injuries all year. Lin had back spasms, a knee sprain, the flu and several other issues throughout the course of the season. Beverley had a torn abdominal muscle, a broken hand and torn meniscus. Between all the injuries, it was hard for the two to create a consistent flow on the court.

While Lin bounced back and forth from role to role, he tried to maintain his strengths – attacking the basket, shooting – while trying to improve on defense.

Not having a defined role was tough on him at times.

Lin said that he has embraced his role off the bench and hopes to improve there. He said he planned to look at San Antonio guard Manu Ginobili, who has been a top player in the league for years and has rarely been a starter.

“I have plenty of fuel to the fire,” Lin said. “We have a talented team and I thought we would go further. It hurt a lot to lose.”

While Lin is continuing to grow and mature, his name continues to fly with trade rumors and speculation.

He said he understands that he could be traded and knows that it is all part of the business.

“Next year will be my fifth season so my first year and half I dealt with my name being surrounded with getting cut and things like that, then it was my name being surrounded with trades,” Lin said. “So I would much rather take the second one than the first. I am not really too worried about it.”

On Saturday night, he had some friends over and they wanted to watch the Clippers-Warriors game. He wasn’t keen on the idea.

“It’s hard when you are in the league,” Lin said. “It is different than being a fan and wanting to watch all the games. It still hurts.”

Lin’s calendar is clear now. He won’t have another glaring reminder of the team’s heartbreaking loss.

Now’s the time to look forward, he said.

“I think another year together would definitely help, some experience,” Lin said. “From a personnel standpoint, from a player standpoint, on paper, we have a very talented team. And we have a lot of pieces so I wouldn’t say we definitely need to add this or add that.
