When you hear someone refer to Marcus Smart, you hear him described
as a winner. You hear people talk about his strength, his athleticism,
his effort and his leadership qualities. What you never hear is anyone
refer to him as a shooter.

Smart did manage to make minimal improvements as a shooter from his
freshman to sophomore years at Oklahoma State, raising his field goal

29.9. But, while he got to the free throw line more frequently (8.1
free throws per game vs. 6.5 as a freshman), his percentage at the
stripe dipped from 77.7 to 72.8.

That being said, one veteran NBA general manager went on record with
ESPN's NBA draft expert Chad Ford in saying that Smart's shooting is
better than many perceive.

"I don't think Marcus is a bad shooter," he told Ford. "I think his
form looks pretty good and you see it will go in when he's squared and

shots. He was trying to do too much at Oklahoma State. If he can trust
his teammates in the NBA and be a leader, I think he'll be just fine as
a shooter. Shot selection is the key for him."

Given that Smart's primary roles as a rookie will likely be to defend
and distribute, regardless of which team drafts him, the reduced pressure
to be his team's primary scorer could allow the point guard to thrive
early in his NBA career.
