Tigers president and general manager Dave Dombrowski and Brewers vice
president and general manager Doug Melvin have been named co-recipients of
the Sporting News Executive of the Year in Major League Baseball for the 2011
season.
The award has been handed out since 1936, but it's the first time in history
that it is being shared for a single season. It's also the first time both
longtime baseball executives have received the award, which was presented
here on Tuesday evening during a dinner among the GMs gathered for this
week's annual meetings.
Both men received an equal number of votes from their peers. The voting was
conducted and had to be submitted before the end of the regular season.
The Tigers and Brewers both won their respective divisions this season and
were eliminated in the League Championship Series. The 95-67 Tigers won the
American League Central by 15 games over the Indians, and lost to the Rangers
in a six-game ALCS. Meanwhile, the 96-66 Brewers outlasted the National
League Wild Card-winning Cardinals by six games in the NL Central race, but
lost the NLCS in six games to St. Louis.
Dombrowski, 55, has been general manager of the Expos, Marlins and Tigers,
winning the 1997 World Series with Florida over Cleveland in seven games. He
became GM of the Expos at 31, the youngest person to earn that position at
the time. He's been with the Tigers since 2002. Under his watch, Detroit has
been to the World Series once, losing in 2006 to St. Louis in five games.
Melvin, 59, has been general manager for the Rangers and Brewers. During his
tenure in Texas from 1994-2001, the Rangers went to the playoffs three times,
but were eliminated in the AL Division Series. He joined the Brewers in 2002,
and has brought that club back to respectability. The Brew Crew has made the
playoffs twice since 2008, and won the division title this year for the first
time since 1982, and only the second time in club history.
Recent winners of the award have been Walt Jocketty of the Reds, who won for
the third time last year; Dan O'Dowd of the Rockies in 2009; Andrew Friedman
of the Rays, who won in '08, and Mark Shapiro of the Indians, the winner in
'07 and '05. Terry Ryan, who just returned to his post with the Twins after a
four-year absence, won the award in '06.
