Red Sox, Padilla Close To Deal
BOSTON (CBS) – The Boston Red Sox are close to adding some more depth to
their starting rotation.
CBS Sports’ Jon Heyman is reporting the Red Sox are getting closer to a deal
with 34-year-old Vicente Padilla.
Padilla has served as a starter for most of his career, but worked out of the
Los Angeles Dodgers bullpen last season. He made nine appearances for LA in
2011, allowing four runs in 8.2 innings pitched. Padilla started 16 games for
the Dodgers in 2010, going 6-5 with a 4.05 ERA.
For his 13-year career, Padilla is 104-90 with a 4.31 ERA in 237 starts. He
earned an All-Star nod in 2002 when he went 14-11 with a 3.28 ERA in 32
starts for the Philadelphia Phillies.
Padilla could contend for one of the final two spots in the Red Sox rotation,
with Daniel Bard, Aaron Cook and Alfredo Aceves a few of the other names to
fill the two slots.
