Veteran Major League pitcher Bartolo Colon reportedly was taken to the
hospital after he was struck in the mouth by a line drive in a Dominican
Winter League game on Sunday, according to Carlos Almanzar of ESPN Radio in
Santo Domingo.
Colon, a Dominican native, was pitching for Aguilas Cibaenas against
Gigantes del Cibao when the incident occurred. He did not suffer a fracture
or lose any teeth as a result of the line drive, according to Dionisio
Soldevila of ESPNDeportes.com.
The 39-year-old right-hander has pitched in the big leagues for 15 seasons,
and went 10-9 with a 3.43 ERA in 24 starts for the A's last year. His season
ended when he tested positive for a performance-enhancing substance in
August.
A pending free agent, Colon had made one previous start for Aguilas, giving
up three runs in five innings while striking out eight on Oct. 19.
