The Texas Rangers are among several teams that have scouted right-handed
reliever Kyuji Fujikawa, who is about to receive free agency from Nippon Pro
Baseball.
Fujikawa, 32, was 2-2 with 24 saves and a 1.32 ERA in 47 2/3 innings this
season with Hanshin of the Japan Central League. His top pitches are the
fastball and the split-finger fastball. He has more velocity than
right-hander Koji Uehara, another former NPB reliever who spent the last 1
1/2 seasons with the Rangers. Uehara is a free agent.
Because Fujikawa is eligible for free agency, he would not have to go through
the posting process. That would allow him to negotiate with all major-league
teams.
Arizona, the Los Angeles Angels and the Los Angeles Dodgers are also known to
have scouted Fujikawa. He visited California on a family vacation last week
and toured Dodger Stadium.
