As expected, Troy Tulowitzki was not included on Team USA’s provisional
roster announced today. The door remains slightly ajar that he could be added
later. It’s Tulo’s understanding that the WBC committee would need to see
him play in spring training games testing his surgically-repaired left groin
before deciding whether to move forward. The WBC would have to insure his
contract, assuming a risk given the $140 million remaining on his deal.

Tulowitzki played in only 47 games last season, sidelined for the final four
months with a leg injury that required surgery. Team USA’s final roster must
be set on Feb. 20. However, a spot can be left open or a player can be subbed
out due to injury. It remains a longshot, but the door isn’t closed.

The provisional roster featured 27 players. If not Tulo, I would fully expect
team USA to consider adding another starting pitcher. Detroit’s Justin
Verlander would be the big catch. Here’s the roster:
