Right-hander Yu Darvish has a message for all the amateur pitching coaches
out there, including those who type or talk for a living: “Leave the
pitching to me.”

Three days after proclaiming himself a “breaking ball pitcher,” Darvish was
asked Tuesday about all the attention his pitch selection has received in the
American media. Darvish has been questioned about the pitch selection because
it is has changed drastically from last year when he threw fastballs and
cutters 64.4 percent of the time. This year that percentage is down to 54.2.
先前達比修有曾被質疑表現之所以下滑，乃在於配球模式上的不同，去年他的直球切球

“The American media tells me what to do,” Darvish said through an
interpreter. “I don’t think the Japanese media ever did that. We play a
game on the field, not on a desk. And I think we are the experts about the
game.”

Darvish’s point is that his performance has differed little; only the
win-loss results have changed. Darvish has made 18 starts this year with the
May 16 130-pitch outing against Detroit being the midpoint. Over the first
nine games, he was 7-1 with a 2.97 ERA and the Rangers won his lone
no-decision. In the nine games since, he’s 1-3 with a 3.07 ERA and the team
is just 2-7. While there are subtle differences in his ERA and his opponents’
batting average (.174 in the first nine starts; .213 since), the biggest
difference is in the run support he’s received. He average 9.05 runs per
game in the first nine; 2.76 since.

“My ERA stayed steady,” he said. “If we had won those games, I don’t
think anybody would be saying anything.”
