The Arizona Diamondbacks are searching for a pitching coach, and USA Today
suggested Dave Duncan, the Cardinals’ former coach and the longest-tenured
pitching coach in big-league history, would be “the perfect fit.”
A source confirmed that the Diamondbacks have approached Duncan.
He took a leave of absence from the Cardinals in 2011 to help his wife battle
cancer, and he did not coach in 2012 to be with Jeanine Duncan until her
death in June 2013.
Open to a return to baseball, Duncan, who spent 16 years with the Cardinals,
has fielded interest for a variety of roles.
Arizona would offer a familiar and welcome location if Duncan wishes to
return to the field. His son, Shelley, and grandchildren live in the Phoenix
area, where his two sons, Shelley and former Cardinals outfielder Chris,
spent time growing up.
