OAKLAND -– The A’s have acquired catcher Geovany Soto from the Texas
Rangers for cash considerations, the team announced.
Soto, a right-handed hitter, has played in just 10 major league games this
season after missing a large portion of the year recovering from knee surgery
to repair torn cartilage. A groin injury in July also hindered him. He’s
hitting .237 with one homer and three RBI in 10 games. He’s a .248 hitter
with 92 home runs over 10 big league seasons and is considered a solid
defender.

The A’s already have three catchers on the roster in Derek Norris, John Jaso
and Stephen Vogt, though a foot injury has relegated Vogt primarily to first
base. He hasn’t been in the mix behind the plate for several weeks.
Norris has been battling a back injury, but it’s not known if it’s
something serious enough to land him on the disabled list. They could use a
bit of offensive help from the right side.
The A’s also announced they’ve acquired a minor league catcher, Bryan
Anderson, from the Reds in exchange for international money.
Fox Sports' Ken Rosenthal has also reported that the A's have claimed Rays
shortstop Yunel Escobar on waivers from Tampa Bay. They have until Tuesday
afternoon to work out a trade, or the Rays can simply let the A's assume his
contract or pull him back off waivers and keep him. Escobar is signed for the
next two seasons at a total of $13 million.
