On the plus side, the Blue Jays have the luxury of waiting until later in
spring to see if they have to do something. They have lefty bats in camp to
potentially replace Saunders’ own lefty bat, and to potentially platoon with
Kevin Pillar. Namely, they are Andy Dirks, Caleb Gindl, Chris Colabello,
Chris Dickerson, and Ezequiel Carrera. The latter two, along with Pillar,
could also spell expected starting center fielder, Dalton Pompey,
defensively. Perhaps infielder Danny Valencia, a right handed hitter who
crushes lefties could get reps in the outfield too and becomes a super
utility guy. Surely, too much is up in the air to make any rash decisions
right now.

On the transaction front, the Jays could look to acquire free agent OF Dayan
Viciedo (RHH) or trade for Padres’ OF/DH Carlos Quentin (RHH, who is owed
$8M this year and has a mutual option for 2016), but both lack positional
flexibility. Sure, they could DH, but their defense would be lacking should
they ever have to play left field.
nother intriguing option that I like may lie in Padres’ OF Will Venable who
can play any outfield spot admirably and is making only $4.25M in his final
year before free agency. He’s been worth at least 2 WAR for four of the past
five years and is a solid player.
