Cincinnati Reds All-Star catcher Devin Mesoraco is officially done for the
season.

The 2014 All-Star hasn't caught since April 12. He was relegated mostly to
pinch hitting and serving as the designated hitter in interleague games
before being placed on the disabled list May 25. The Reds also explored using
him in left field.
The sore left hip bothers Mesoraco when he crouches but isn't a problem when
he hits or runs. Doctors initially thought the hip might heal if he stayed
away from catching, but it continued to bother him.
Doctors also told him that he couldn't injure the hip by playing, so he
initially put off the surgery.
"It's something you can't do any more damage to," Mesoraco said earlier this
month. "The recovery from surgery is four to six months, so that's not going
to come into play."
Mesoraco batted .178 with no homers and two RBIs this season.
