The Red Sox have acquired outfielder Rajai Davis from the Athlletics for for
minor-league outfielder Rafael Rincones, as first reported by CSNNE’s Evan
Drellich. Boston designated Steve Selsky for assignment to make room.
Davis, 38, has hit .233/.294/.353 with five homers and 26 steals for Oakland
this season, though he has hit .303/.361/.487 over his last 30 games. He has
seen the bulk of his innings in center field, so he’ll serve as a temporary
replacement for Jackie Bradley Jr. in Boston while Bradley Jr. deals with a
thumb injury.
Davis joins Mookie Betts, Andrew Benintendi, Brock Holt and Chris Young as
healthy outfield options for a club that placed Bradley Jr. on the disabled
list earlier Wednesday. Bradley Jr. is not expected to miss more than the 10
days required of him, as an MRI revealed no ligament damage.
Davis, who hit a key home run to tie Game 7 of the World Series in the 8th
inning for the Indians last fall, has 12 years of major-league experience
with Pittsburgh, San Francisco, Oakland, Toronto, Detroit and Cleveland. He’
s a Connecticut native who attended the University of Connecticut at Avery
Point in Groton.
Rincones, 18, is a 6-foot, 159 lb. outfielder who has hit .258/.373/.369 with
eight steals in 57 games for the Red Sox’ Dominican Summer League team this
year.He was not listed among the club’s top 30 prospects by MLB Pipeline.
