Who pays for Tommy John surgery in the MLB?
Like any on-the-job injury, the employer pays; if the player is under
contract at the time of the injury the team pays.
Players on a teams disabled list or under contract and injured get a list of
approved physicians for the specialty required within the team’s home area.
He may choose from anyone on that list at the team’s expense.
A Player may seek a “second evaluation” from a medical specialist on the
accepted listing who is located outside of the geographic region within which
the Player’s Club is located, provided that the Player is not absent from
the Club for an unreasonable period of time.
If the player wishes an opinion from a physician not on the list, the team
must approve the physician in writing prior to the visit or they do not have
to pay.
Players who have at least one day of major league service time have
healthcare for life thus if they are not under contract they still have
medical insurance through the MLBPA.
