DALLAS — Emerging as the Dallas Mavericks’ leading scorer through the first
20 games of the season, Dallas Mavericks guard Monta Ellis has steadily belt
up his resume to garner consideration to make his first All-Star appearance.

Averaging a team-best 20.7 points per game, 4.8 assists and 1.6 steals this
season, Ellis’ statistical performances have spoken for themselves. But it’
s Ellis’ willingness to put the Mavericks (15-5) on his back during clutch
situations that has impressed his teammates and coach Rick Carlisle the most.

No player has been more impressed with Ellis’ play through the first 20
games than 12-time All-Star Dirk Nowitzki, however, after relinquishing the
scoring responsibilities to the 29-year-old. And with Ellis making a strong
case to represent the Mavs in the All-Star Game on Feb. 15 in New York,
Nowitzki threw his full support behind his teammate while building his
campaign.

for the All-Star Game last year, so I’m his No. 1 supporter. It’s no secret
this year that he’s really our go-to guy. He’s in his prime. He’s great at
driving, but his in-between shot got better. I feel like he deserves it, but
there’s still a lot of basketball to be played until the halfway point. We
want him to keep it up, stay aggressive and come through for us.”

Ellis certainly came through in the Mavs’ last two outings while swooping in
as a caped crusader with the game on the line.

Scoring a season-high 38 points on 16-of-35 shooting in just over 45 minutes
of work, Ellis led the Mavericks to a 132-129 double-overtime victory on the
road Tuesday night over the Chicago Bulls while extending the game to an
extra period with three clutch free throws with 1.2 seconds left in
regulation. He then swished in the go-ahead three-pointer with 39.9 ticks
remaining in the second overtime period before finishing with his
highest-scoring output in a Mavericks uniform.

But, as Ellis modestly says, the nine-year pro was merely just taking full
advantage of the opportunities extended to him as his teammates and Carlisle
entrusted the cat-quick guard to step up when they needed him to most.

“Really, we were just playing good as a team and I was just taking what the
defense was giving me the whole night,” Ellis said while summing up his
performance Tuesday. “Some went in and some didn’t, but they went in when
they needed to.”

But Ellis’ heroics weren’t done just yet on the Mavs’ four-game road trip.

With Nowitzki in street clothes and resting on the second night of a
back-to-back, the ball again went to Ellis with the game on the line
Wednesday in Milwaukee. And after taking a page from Nowitzki’s book while
swishing a one-legged fadeaway at the buzzer, Ellis once again came through
to lift the Mavs to a 107-105 victory.

buckets late. He keeps you in games, and it’s nice having a guy like him to
be able to create and have no fear and absolutely just knock down big shots
at big parts of the game in the fourth quarter and overtime. Tonight, I would
think it’s normally a circus shot. But, coming out of his hands, I had a
feeling it was going to go in.”

at least 19.0 points per game in each of the last seven seasons. He also has
four seasons of averaging over 20 points an outing to his credit, including a
career-high 25.5 average during the 2009-10 schedule.

However, Ellis has yet to be selected to an All-Star team in his stellar
career. That could change this season, according to Carlisle, if Ellis
continues putting the Mavs on his back.

“I mean, we wanted Monta to have the ball at the end, hit the shot and get
out of here,” Carlisle confessed after Wednesday’s game. “Look, that is an
All-Star, flat out. The load he has carried on this trip has been phenomenal.
Winning two games without Dirk, Monta Ellis is having some type of year.”
