The Chinese Basketball Association’s current MVP could be on Dallas’ summer
league roster and might be a training camp invite.
The Dallas Mavericks have “put the wheels in motion” to sign Chinese
Basketball Association star Ding Yanyuhang to their summer league roster and
possibly invite him to training camp, president of basketball operations
Donnie Nelson told Eddie Sefko of the Dallas Morning News Saturday.
Ding was the CBA’s domestic MVP this season, averaging 24.2 points and just
over five rebounds in 39 games for the Shandong Golden Stars, who were bounced
from the first round of the CBA playoffs.
Per Sefko, Mark Cuban wouldn’t comment on the 23-year-old star because the
signing wouldn’t be official until July 1.
This isn’t just a PR move by the Mavericks aimed at tapping into the Chinese
basketball market. Ding is actually a good player with the ability to score the
ball, which is always welcome in Dallas. And at just 23 years old, he fits in
Dallas’ plans to build around a younger core.
Signing an undrafted swingman worked this year for the Mavericks with Nicolas
Brussino; perhaps good fortune will strike again next season with Ding.
