’s been taking the ball out of his teammates’ hands all season, for better o
r worse. Dallas does boast the best defensive rebounding rate in the league; y
ou can’t say Jordan is allowing second chance opportunities. But what Jordan
’s doing is selfish. In this particular instance, Jordan simply might not hav
e seen Doncic, but Doncic’s annoyed glance to the bench makes it clear this w
asn’t about this moment alone. Doncic should be allowed to rebound unconteste
d layups and made subsequent decisions with the ball, and he shouldn’t be tak
ing friendly fire from a teammate, especially when he’s been dealing with low
er back tightness recently.
That’s the small picture. The big picture: Jordan might be overexerting himse
lf on the glass, but he didn’t grab that rebound because he hates Doncic, or
because the veterans are collectively icing him out in a grand conspiracy theo
ry. Jordan just likes averaging 15 rebounds per game, and he thinks it will he
lp his free agency situation in a contract year. (The Kings might fall for tha
t.) This is how he accomplishes that.
