Report: Jerry Sloan joins Steve Clifford in Bucks' hunt for coach

Lakers assistant Steve Clifford was scheduled to interview with the Milwaukee
Bucks on Monday, as Yahoo Sports reported and Ken Berger of CBSSports.com has
confirmed. Clifford was hired by Mike Brown last summer, and he stayed on when
Mike D'Antoni took over. Before that, he worked with Stan Van Gundy, his
brother Jeff Van Gundy and Tom Thibodeau. If it's a good defensive program
over the past five years, he's worked with it.
Ken Berger reported last week that the Bucks were looking for more of a
hands-on type of coach to get a hold of a locker room run amuck. And along
with the tough-minded Clifford, there's another candidate on the docket.
USA Today reported Monday that former Jazz coach Jerry Sloan has already met
with Milwaukee.
According to two people with knowledge of the situation, the former Utah
Jazz coach who resigned abruptly in Feb. 2011 has already met with the Milwaukee
Bucks about their vacant coaching position and is being seriously considered.
The people spoke to USA TODAY Sports the condition of anonymity because of
the private nature of the coaching search
Sloan is a decidedly interesting candidate for a number of reasons. He brings
the kind of control and intensity the team is looking for, and he would have
the respect of any veterans the team brings in. He has a strong team concept
built around the pick and roll that works with several of the players they
have signed.
Maybe most important, there's the possibility of Sloan working his point
guard development magic with Brandon Jennings, should the Bucks re-sign him
in restricted free agency this summer. Jennings has needed a coach to bring
out his better instincts, and Scott Skiles and Jim Boylan never got it done.
Could Sloan do that? Or would Sloan be unable to connect with a younger roster?
It's a debate, but the Bucks are definitely looking for experience and intensity.
We'll see how that sits with Jennings, who's likely more interested in a
player's coach to let him, you know, do Brandon Jennings things.
