O.J. Mayo won't exercise option, will become free agent

O.J. Mayo is trying to turn a fairly successful 2012-13 season into a big
payday.
Via Ken Berger of CBSSports.com, Mayo will not exercise his player option for
the 2013-14 season, which will make him an unrestricted free agent.
Mayo had a $4.3-million option next season after signing a two-year deal with
the Mavs last offseason.
Mayo, 25, had maybe his best NBA season last year in Dallas, averaging 15.3
points on 44.9 percent shooting and a career-high 40.7 percent from 3, plus a
career-high 4.4 assists.
With the free-agent market being a little light on shooting guards, Mayo
could find himself as one of the top targets. He showed promise as a
secondary or maybe even primary scorer last season and in the right situation
could be a prize signing.
It's also good news for the Mavericks, who are hoarding cap space as much as
possible and any extra penny helps in their pursuit of Dwight Howard. Having
Mayo's salary come off the books is a nice benefit, even if it means they're
likely losing a good player in the meantime.
