One such trade that seems to fit that description is the rumored deal between
the New Orleans Pelicans and Houston Rockets that would swap Ryan Anderson
for Omer Asik.

Rumors of an Anderson-for-Asik deal initially surfaced over the offseason,
shortly after the Rockets signed Dwight Howard, but they’re starting to pop
up again now that Asik’s departure is inevitable due to his recent trade
request.

Houston’s biggest weakness this season has been the play of their power
forwards. When playing Howard and Asik together didn’t work out, the Rockets
tried Terrence Jones and Donatas Motiejunas at the four, but neither
second-year player is ready to produce at a high level on a team with
championship aspirations.

Anderson could be the solution for Houston and as one of the best stretch fours

Anderson played alongside Howard for three seasons on the Orlando Magic and
they were very productive together since they complement each other well.
While Howard and Anderson weren’t particularly close during their stint in
Orlando (with Howard sometimes chewing out Anderson in a packed locker room
following losses), there’s no questioning the results. Anderson is one of
the best three-point shooters in the league, drawing his man out of the paint
and creating space for Howard. Meanwhile, Howard attracts double-teams down
low and kicks the ball out for open threes. Howard and Anderson had some of
their best statistical seasons playing alongside each other, and this move
would seemingly make Houston a better team.

While the Pelicans love Anderson and aren’t actively shopping him like the

came along. Asik, who last season proved to be a starting-caliber center and
one of the better defensive big men in the league, might just be that offer.

Entering this season, it was clear that the biggest hole in New Orleans was
at the center position. Jrue Holiday, Eric Gordon, Tyreke Evans and Anthony
Davis had the Pelicans talking about making the playoffs, but it’s hard to
picture this team making any noise in the Western Conference with Jason
Smith, Jeff Withey or Greg Stiemsma starting at the five. Now, with Stiemsma
out for six to eight weeks with an MCL sprain, their frontcourt is even
thinner than before. Davis has shown that he can be one of the best power
forwards in the NBA (another reason that Anderson is expendable), but he can’
t play center.
