Chicago Tribune sportswriter Sam Smith claimed that Jordan increasingly
seemed to operate under his own rules. Jordan expected special
treatment as the Bulls’ best player. He did not socialize very much with
teammates, especially after Higgins and Oakley departed. Jordan slept
comparatively little on road trips, often playing card games late at night
with North Carolina friends Fred Whitfield and Fred Kearns. Unlike his
teammates, he did not have to visit the trainer after reporting sick and
missing practice. Jordan always reported to the team bus last because he
did not like to wait. His friends rode the team bus and stayed in the team
hotel on road trips, but other players did not enjoy that privilege. He
employed his personal trainer Tim Grover, but teammates worked with
team strength coaches Al Vermeil and Erik Helland.
Jackson, meanwhile, urged general manager Krause to acquire point
guard Derek Harper from Dallas and trade reserves King, Armstrong, and Hopson.
Krause replied that he could not trade reserves very easily. The
Bulls considered trading Levingston to Denver for Walt Davis, but Jackson
questioned the latter’s defensive skills. After New Jersey upset Chicago in
late January, Jordan criticized Krause and wanted the Bulls to remove him
as general manager. “We can’t get anything done because of him.” He
concluded, “If I were general manager, we’d be a better team.”
