Bishop McGuinness product and former NBA player Daniel Orton was in the news
last week for making negative comments about boxing superstar and Filipino
icon Manny Pacquiao
Well, it cost Orton his job.
Orton has reportedly been fined $5,650 and kicked out of the Philippine
Basketball Association for his comments following a game in which his
Purefoot Hotshots team played a pro-league game against a team with Pacquiao
on it.
"Professional boxer, yeah, okay... professional basketball player, no. It's a
joke," Orton said at the time.
Pacquiao, who is 5-foot-6, scored a single point in the game. He's considered
a national hero in the Philippines for not just his illustrious boxing
career, but for his political contributions. Pacquiao serves as a national
congressman.
The league issued a statement obtained by Yahoo! Sports, which said "this
insulting behaviour will never be condoned by this league."
"Everyone is angry at him... it is like he went to the United States and
insulted the name of Martin Luther King," said Rene Pardo, the top
administrator for the Purefood Hotshots who was quoted by Philippines media.
Orton apologized via Twitter on Monday.
