It’s important to distinguish between Rudy Gay, the player, and Rudy Gay,
the idea. The latter is irrelevant for our purposes. The former, on the other
hand, is coming off of his best season as a pro: a productive, efficient, and
unselfish campaign as one of Sacramento’s usage leaders. Gay hasn’t
transformed his game so much as seen it through to maturity. Although the
areas of the floor where he operates most frequently have shifted over time,
Gay’s basic skills and approach have remained more or less the same. The
growth is in the doing; gradual refinement and a slow shift in Gay’s
creative priorities have made him a better version of what he’s always been.

With that comes the same basic concerns regarding Gay’s work on defense.
Dwelling too much on Gay’s shot selection always risked missing the point.
Gay, a long-armed, 6’9” wing, should be more useful in coverage than he is.
He should have the tools after nine NBA seasons to help his team guard. That
just isn’t the case. We’ve seen Gay defend well for stretches or games at a
time, though too often he’s caught standing upright with his hands down or
lulled a full step out of position. The balance is underwhelming. – R.M.

After playing for powerhouses at Oak Hill Academy and the University of North
Carolina, and making the playoffs in each of his first four seasons in
Denver, one wonders what was going through Ty Lawson’s head as the Nuggets
self-combusted over the last two seasons. What was he thinking when the
Nuggets parted ways with George Karl, or when they failed to retain GM Masai
Ujiri, or when the resulting front office mixed nepotism with inexperience,
or when Karl’s replacement started pulling desperate JV stunts like rapping
his scouting reports to players and regularly calling out his team in the
media?
在打過Oak Hill Academy和北卡大，還有前四季在金塊隊都打進季後賽後，想知道
在金塊自爆的這兩季Lawson在想些什麼? 當金塊把Karl換掉、不讓GM Masai Ujiri回來、

Once you’ve tasted the best champagne in the world, you’re more likely to
grimace at the cheap stuff, right? Maybe it shouldn’t be a surprise, then,
that, Lawson wasn’t in any big hurry to get back from the All-Star break. Or
that a report suggested that the Nuggets were counting down the days until
the end of the season with huddle chants. Or that Lawson’s production and
efficiency slipped during his second straight lottery season in 2014-15. Or
that his Defensive Real Plus-Minus rating plummeted to 66th among point
guards in 2014-15. Everyone knew the Nuggets were going nowhere, and Lawson
appeared like he had checked out even before he was livestreaming himself
smoking hookah and floating trade speculation on draft night.

To be clear, there’s absolutely no excuse for Lawson’s reckless and stupid
off-court behavior, which has seen him arrested twice for DUI this year, and
Denver was smart to ship him to Houston to clear the way for promising rookie
Emmanuel Mudiay. Lawson clearly needs help, and the NBA should throw the book
at him from a suspension standpoint once his cases are fully resolved.

But Lawson, 27, need not be a lost cause: his track record of success from
high school through the Karl years suggests he can be a high-functioning
player for a high-performing team, and a change of scenery was clearly needed
given Denver’s dysfunction. The speedy, 5’11” point guard looks like a
strong fit with the Rockets, who play an up-tempo style that perfectly suits
Lawson’s game, are coming off a trip to the Western Conference finals, and
have enough A-list talent to avoid burdening Lawson with leadership
responsibility. Lawson’s primary skills – pushing the pace, breaking down
defenses off the dribble, instinctively distributing the ball and knocking
down three-point shots – are all valued in GM Daryl Morey’s vision of the
game. Hopefully, once Lawson clears his head, he will realize that he’s been
given one hell of a second chance. – B.G.
