LeBron James: 'I wish I could be around (Popovich) every day'
The game’s greatest coach, and the game’s greatest player. Enough of James
meddling with first-time coaches. For basketball’s sake, couldn’t we just
give LeBron the Pop treatment and watch basketball magic unfold? In short, it
’s not going to happen, so the best we can hope for is more head-to-head
Finals chess matches, which isn’t a bad alternative. But James was asked
about Popovich at Friday’s All-Star media day, and with all due respect to
Tyronn Lue, James all but admitted his deep admiration for the Spurs coach.
“I’ve studied a lot from the outside looking in,” James said. “I can’t
be there on a day-to-day basis. I wish I could. I believe he’s one of the
great basketball minds that we’ve ever had in this game, and I wish I could
be around him every day to kind of just pick his brain and see what he does,
what he thinks. I believe I think the game, I’m not going to say in a
similar fashion because he has more experience than me, but I think I have a
high basketball IQ, too.”
