JR Smith takes shot at Cavs over handling of 2018 Finals gaffe

In an appearance this week on the “I AM ATHLETE” podcast, JR Smith took a sh
ot at his former team, the Cleveland Cavaliers, over their handling of the inc
ident where he forgot the score in Game 1 of the 2018 NBA Finals against the G
olden State Warriors. With under five seconds left in a tied game at the end o
f regulation, Smith got an offensive rebound after a missed free throw by team
mate George Hill but dribbled the ball out as time expired, thinking the Cavs
were up by one point. The Warriors would go on to win in overtime and eventual
ly sweep the Cavs to win it all.

“It was a island because none of the coaches said s—,” said Smith of the af
termath of his error. “It was like nobody wanted to take responsibility for i
t, so you left me with it. You know what I’m saying? And it’s like, okay, co
ol. If that’s the way you want to play it, we can’t call ourselves a real te
am.

“In any other situation, had it been anybody else, miss a shot, make a shot,w
hatever, they’ll tell you firsthand, ‘Oh, one play don’t change the game,'
” added Smith. “But in this situation, nobody said that. Now granted, this a
tied ballgame. ‘Oh why you ain’t shoot it?’ I get the rebound, I got KD [K
evin Durant] who’s seven foot, stick his hand up, he’s ten feet tall. I got
another dude who’s my height right behind me. What else am I gonna do with th
e ball other than dribble it out?”
當時的局面，如果換別人來處理，那就是投中一個球或者投不進。教練應該首先告訴你，
一個球不能改變比賽，但是卻始終沒有人這樣說。現在就假定我當時知道是平局，大家說
你為什麽不投。我拿到了籃板，7尺的KD防我，已經伸出了手。我背後還有一個和我一樣
身高的人在防守。如果不運球把時間耗完，我還應該做什麼呢？
Smith did admit though that he was not paying attention to the score because h
e had been talking to a coach during a deadball sequence earlier.
JR承認當時在死球狀態的時候他在和一位教練說話，所以沒注意到比分。
