1. a. What are geminates? b. Are there geminates in English?

2. a. How does a semivowel differ from a vowel phonetically?
b. How does a semivowel differ from a vowel phonologically? (2×6=12%)
3. Place the following symbols in their approximate places in the vowel space
below; also in the blank space after each item, write (+R) if it is rounded
or (-R) if it is unrounded. (12%)

4. Give at least three possible reasons why the syllable count for the same
word in English may not always be the same by all English speakers on all

6. Let's assume that you are learning a new tone language from someone of the
opposite sex, and that you have just imitated a word they modeled for you,
using the exact same pitches they did. Why might your teacher tell you that
your tone is "incorrect", even though it was exact copy of the model they
just gave you? (10%)
7. Why might becoming more aware of the pronunciation and prosody of one's
native language be useful when learning a foreign language? (12%)
