1. (20 pts) Write down the chemical formulae of the following molecules: (a)3-methyl-1-hexene, (b) anthracene, (c) potassium hexacyanoferrate(II), (d) sodium tetrahydroxozincate(II).
2. (8 pts) The compound methyl t-butyl ether (MTBE) has been added to gasolines to increase the octane number. Write down its chemical formula. Why can it increase the octane number?
3. (16 pts) Predict the energy level splittings induced in the three p orbitals by octahedral and square-planar crystal fields.
4. (20 pts) In the bonding of Cr(3+) and the ligands in the octahedral complexes, the πbonds of the ligands Cl(-) and CN(-) have the opposite effects on the d orbital energy gap. Compare [CrCl6](3-) with [Cr(CN)6](3-). Which one has a larger energy gap? Draw the appropriate MO correlation diagram to explain your answer.
