Future Computing Platforms: Challenges and Opportunities
Prof. David Brooks, Harvard University
Abstract:
The invention of the microprocessor 40 years ago started a transformation to
the ubiquitous computing environment that we live in today. The steady
technological progress that enabled this transformation has slowed in the
past several years due to power constraints and limits of underlying device
physics. This talk explores the intersection of trends in fabrication
technology, software design, processor architecture, and computing industry
economics to postulate about directions of future computing platforms.
Biography:
David Brooks is a Gordon McKay Professor of Computer Science in the School of
Engineering and Applied Sciences at Harvard University. He joined Harvard in
2002 after spending one year as a research staff member at IBM T.J. Watson
Research Center. Prof. Brooks received his BS in Electrical Engineering at
the University of Southern California and MA and PhD degrees in Electrical
Engineering at Princeton University. His research interests include
technology-aware computer design, with an emphasis on power-efficient
computer architectures and system software for high-performance and embedded
systems.
