the author considers that the manager of the purchasesing department
knows little about the properties of metals, so he or she can not be
a good manager. However, an excellent manager not only have professional
background but ability to plan , organize, lead , and control his or her
department. Before Gerstner had been selected to be the CEO of IBM ,
he was a director of a food company . Gerstner still succeeded to lead IBM .
Secondly, the author suggests that a scientist from the research
division can do the work well as a purchasesing department manager.
Maybe the scientist knows a lot of the properties of metals. However, we
are not sure he could fit the position of manager . Manager and reacher
stand in different way to deal with his or her job.
